Exterior Stucco Mouldings

Stucco is a material consisting of a binder, an aggregate and water. Stucco is applied wet and will dry to a very hard and dense solid. Stucco is used to decorate walls and ceilings and is often used to improve the appearance of less attractive materials like concrete, cinder-block, or bricks.

Traditionally stucco was made of a combination of lime sand and water however in modern times we’ve begun to use cement, sand and water. Occasionally acrylics and glass fibres are added to the mixture to improve the strength of stucco. Typically this is done with a one-coat stucco system rather than the standard three coat method. Stucco can either be applied directly over brick or on top of metal lath.

Stucco is a very useful building material to use as siding due to it’s attractiveness and durability and due to the fact that it doesn’t require a great deal of maintenance as an exterior finish. It is very popularly used on Spanish-style residences however in recent years it’s seen a resurgence in popularity and is often applied to update older homes and increase their property value. Often times concrete finishes will be painted or whitewashed to give it a stucco appearance however paint typically doesn’t adhere well to concrete and will begin to peel within a couple years and will require re-application. There really isn’t a substitute for a stucco finish particularly because colours can be mixed into the stucco formula so that the building doesn’t require painting after the stucco has cured.
